Coronavirus: All NY Hair And Nail Salons, Tattoo Parlors To Close

-Although this article was posted on March 20th, i felt it was important to include since this was the start of the unemployment wave.

  • As much as I could write a lengthy description of why all these places had to shut down I am pretty sure everyone reading this knows the answer to that! Coronavirus and slowing the spread! Stay home orders forced all non-essential businesses to close in order to slow the spread of the virus.
  • The problem is that all non-essential workers are out of jobs for the time being but still need money to support their families. Although this is a huge problem, the invisible enemy is the bigger problem.
  • Workers all around Long Island are facing these problems and at this time it is exciting that the island will open in a week!

More Than 190K New Yorkers File For Unemployment

  • As numbers last week reach 190K, this number is a step forward from last weeks of  223,962. Unemployment numbers in America reach 41 million, reaching levels equal to the Great Depression.
"New York saw a 1656.26 percent increase in unemployment claims since the start of the coronavirus crisis".
  • The problem is that the pandemic has caused a lot of businesses to tank financially due to people staying home and not going out and shopping because of the rules of quarantine. Since people are not putting money into the economy, it cannot get better forcing businesses to layoff employees to try to stay afloat.
  • New Yorkers are getting hit the hardest because as other states reopen we remain closed until June because we need to take precautions based on how hard we were hit by COVID-19. All Americans are affected and globally unemployment is an issue. We can look at these numbers and say that our country is in really bad shape or we can look at it as an opportunity for people to find more work and create new jobs for Americans such as the New Deal after the Great Depression.

'Uncertainty': LI's Blind Bat Brewery Co-Owner Talks Coronavirus

  • This article explains how a brewery and restaurant owner is dealing with the pandemic and all the rules and regulations that go into staying open. His business is taking a hit because much of his business comes from beer tasting which is obviously not allowed or safe at this time. He has altered his beer and food menu for takeout and is trying to stay afloat with minimal staff and only offering pickup.
  • The main issue for Paul Dlugokencky, the co-owner, is that the tasting menu generates a lot of income that just can't be made up in takeout orders, especially during a time like this where people are trying to save money.
  • Any business deemed essential that has to adapt to the new standards in order to keep their staff and customers safe.

Fairway Market Expects Mass Layoffs At 2 Long Island Stores

  • This article talks about how Fairway had to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January and as of today workers will be facing mass layoffs in all four of their Long Island/ City stores.
  • It is hard to stay open especially when people are worried about catching the virus at supermarkets and Fairway doesn't have as many stores on the island to keep afloat like Shoprite and King Kullen.
  • Fairway workers are in trouble according to this article which as of now has employed many people that in the future might not be safe.

Bay Park plan moves ahead, despite crisis

  • There is a plan in place to build the Bay Park Conveyance Project for 408 million dollars. This plan will continue as we move onto 2021.
  • There is not a lot of money right now to spend on this project but it will open up jobs for many.
  • The local government is going to have to prioritize what is important and go from there. The project will cost $408 million but can also put money into the economy and help in the country's reopening.
